Matt DeButts is a journalist based in Palo Alto, California. From 2014-2019 he lived in Beijing, China, where he earned a master’s degree in China studies from Peking University. He also worked as a special correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, a contributing editor to the Economist Intelligence Unit and a politics researcher for Trivium/China. His writing has been published in Foreign Policy, Sixth Tone, SupChina and the San Diego Tribune. He has also published several Chinese language essays online. He is interested in covering Chinese investments abroad, immigration, politics, international relations and technology. Matt has a bachelor’s degree in law, jurisprudence and social thought from Amherst College. He speaks English, Mandarin and Spanish.
