Umang Poddar

Umang Poddar, from India, is pursuing a master’s degree in journalism at Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences. He graduated from the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences in 2019 with bachelor’s degrees in arts and laws. Before turning to journalism, Umang worked at a corporate law firm in New Delhi. He has reported for BBC India and Scroll.in, focusing on how legal systems shape everyday lives. His work centers around simplifying complex legal processes while highlighting their human consequences. Through journalism, Umang hopes to make the justice system more transparent, accessible, and accountable. He is a recipient of the Human Rights and Religious Freedom Journalism Award and was a finalist for the RedInk Journalism Award. At Stanford, Umang is developing skills in data and investigative journalism to report more deeply on India’s justice system.
